@3WHO IS THE DOCTOR`S GREATEST ENEMY?
===================================
@1Admist their plots to wreak havoc upon an unsuspecting population,
many of the Doctor`s enemies have undoubtedy puzzled over the best or
most worthwhile way to defeat him. in this short discussion piece I
will attempt to look at their motives in an effort to discover just
who the Doctor`s greatest enemy was.
Perhaps the best place to start would be with one of the Doctor`s
best known enemies, that is of course the @3Daleks@1. When Terry Nation
invented them he could have had no idea as to just how great their
appeal would be. Subsequently they returned to trouble the Doctor on
a number of occasions more.
If my memory serevs me right in "The Power Of The Daleks" the Doctor
says something along the line of , I would rather face a hundred men
than a single Dalek. Since that time the Daleks have continued to
remain deadly foes of the Doctors, even though it could be argued that
in a way the Doctor enjoyed meeting the Daleks more than any of his
other enemies.
Another enemy whom the Doctor could be said to both enjoy and despise
meeting is of course the @3Master@1. Rarely is an enemy of as equal a
threat to the Doctor as the Master is seen to be. Alongside his aims
for world domination he was constantly plotting ways to defeat his
greatest enemy once and for all. Also the Master was able to employ
enemies whom alone would be difficult for the Doctor to stop,
alonside him close to impossible.
The @3Cybermen@1 also posed a dominant threat to the Doctor, particuarly
in the Troughton era of the show. Like the Daleks they could be seen
to pose a huge threat to the Earth, however unlike the Daleks they
possessed less desire for domination. Being cyber creatures they were
difficult for the Doctor to stop.
Perhaps another set of creatures worthy of our attention are the
@3Sillurians and Sea Devils@1. Possessed by a desire to reclaim the Earth
where they used to live, they also possessed understanding and
kindness. However they also possessed the Nightmare, a disease so
powerful that it could wipe out the whole population of the Earth.
Incidentely the possibility of this is addressed in the New Adventure,
"Blood Heat".
However it is also important to remember those who almost successfully
challenged the Doctor, even if they were unable to make a subsequent
return. One of these is of course the @3Celestial Toymaker@1 who
challenged the Doctor before his first regeneration.
So in conclusion I would like to say that the Doctor has had a large
amount of enemies however all of these were individual in some way. It
is impossible to say that any one particular enemy was dominant, the
success of the Doctor`s adventures depends on a large variety of
foes.
